Description

Product Description

Four animal friends cheer up a very cranky bear.

Nick Bland''s expressive, adorable illustrations complement delightful, rhyming, read-aloud text in this lesson about the importance of sharing with others. Moose, Lion, Zebra, and Sheep take shelter in a cave on a cold and rainy day, only to realize that a bear is there. The bear roars loudly and says that he is trying to sleep. Not understanding why the bear is so cranky, the other animals come up with ways to cheer up the bear. Moose finds antlers for him, Lion gives him a mane, and Zebra paints on stripes. Is there anything the four well-meaning friends can do to help the bear sleep?

From School Library Journal

Gr 1–3—In the Jingle Jangle Jungle, a quartet of comical animals take refuge from a storm in a cave—only to find the titular bear none too happy to be awakened from his sleep. Determined to cheer him up, Moose, Lion, and Zebra adorn the bear with antlers made from branches, a mane made from grass, and stripes painted on with mud—surely he will feel better if he looks like them, right? Only Sheep thinks beyond her own perspective; she shears off some of her wool to make a soft pillow, and the bear finally goes back to sleep. The silly rhyming text bounces along with an infectious rhythm that is perfect for storytime, and kids will enjoy the colorful, cartoonish illustrations and exaggerated features of the animals. (Expect giggles when they see the striped, maned, antlered bear.) This deceptively simple story is also a great jumping-off point for discussions about kindness and empathy.—Kathleen Kelly MacMillan, Carroll County Public Library, MD

I LOST MY KISSES (by Trudie Trewin and illustrated by Nick Bland)"The delightful gouache and graphite-pencil illustrations, set against wide, white backgrounds, have both humor and heft." --BOOKLIST"Bland''s mainly pencil illustrations are livened up with splashes of subtle watercolors. The abundant white space and style of drawing are reminiscent of Ian Falconer''s OLIVIA and just as endearing. The attention to detail and facial expressions are exceptional." --CHILDREN''S LITERATURE

This book is delightful. It has so many lessons tucked into a funny story of friends banding together to cheer up a friend. I showed my husband the illustration of the bear adorned with bits of each friends unique trait and we laughed out loud. I went to stash the book away for a gift and he stopped me because he just had to read the entire story. Add this to your children''s library. You will be glad you did.

We love this book. We’ve memorized this book. It is a household favorite and I feel like it is not well known! Get this book and add it to your children’s collection! It has a great moral story, adorable art, fun words, and it is worth getting the hard cover otherwise you might be like us and get through two soft covers, love them too much, and then finally buy the hardcover.

This book was a FAVORITE in our family while the kids were growing up. I read it so many times that I even recited the book word for word over the phone to the kids, while I was on a business trip. Now I always purchase it for baby showers.

Thought this book would be good but it’s not... I think it was created with good intentions though. There are 4 animals that go into a cave to play because it’s raining outside. Each animal is described, as you can read I’m the first picture I added. Giving the impression that all the animals are cool except for the sheep, she is just plain. There is a bear in the cave that is trying to sleep and scared them away, but they want to try to make him happy so they can play. Each animal has something cool to offer but the sheep is portrayed in a different way. At the end of the book she offers her wool as a pillow so the bear can be comfy, which is nice! But the last page (as you can see In the 2nd pic) says that the sheep is plain but thoughtful. I don’t know, to me that just doesn’t sound right. It definitely could have been a good book for kids if they have worded the story differently. But this is just my option.

I recently ''adopted'' a black bear, through a wildlife organisation, for my three year old granddaughter, and wanted a book to accompany her soft toy. This is a very funny story about a hibernating bear who is repeatedly disturbed by other animals, but there is also a lesson to be learned. I was unable to find an informative book about black bears that was suitable for a small child, but she loves this story and it has made her more aware of the habits of bears.
